Brainstorm

Keys to Screenwriting: Brainstorming - Go Into The Story
My identity plays a heavy role in who I am as an educator in the classroom. Something I feel very passionately about within identity is my cultural background. The experiences my parents went through as first generation immigrants when they came to the United States has impacted how I view political and social policies on topics like immigration and equal rights. My strong feelings about those issues have empowered me as a Latina to be successful in anything I do. This drives comes from the doubt I see in American culture and how policies are put in place to prevent immigrants from becoming successful in the United States.

Project Idea

Now more than ever it is so important to stay up to date on current events. With social studies almost nonexistent in our present curriculum many students are getting their current events news from social media. We know from reading Boyd that students need to develop critical thinking skills in order to understand which media is reliable. What if we as educators took the opportunity to open up deep discussions about current events?

What if I use culturally responsive texts found on https://newsela.com/ in my English Language Arts curriculum in order to empower students. I believe that when students feel empowered in the classroom they are able to find their uniqueness and individualism. This newly found self identity will help them feel more comfortable in the classroom and accomplish tasks with confidence.

I couldn't agree more about empowering our students... I think keeping your students well versed on current events is an excellent way to keep them engaged and informed.

  3. Hi Priscilla!

I love this idea! I agree that students are getting so much of their information from social media without having the skills to think critically about the sources the information is coming from. With everything going on right now in the world, I think having these conversations in classrooms is so important!

  4. This sounds like an engaging and important activity for kids. I try to incorporate current events into our ELA curriculum, but it's not always easy (or approved). I look forward to learning from your presentation, especially given the current social and political climate.

  5. excellent way to ground this in your beliefs... and I really like your approach. "What if..." Is Newsela the best tool? DO you need other sites to compliment this one, or build analysis around the Newsela texts? Can't wait to hear how you are thinking about this.
